small water magic
Hi folks, Spent yesterday morning guiding a Lamoille tributary with the fly. Water temperature was 57 degrees. Water was clear and fairly low for this time of the year. We received a bit of rain today in thunderstorms, could use more. Been awful hot for late May and I think we will be trout fishing small steams exclusively shortly if things do not cool down. The Lamoille main stem is already in the high 60's and reaching 70 degrees by late afternoon. The smalls stream fishing Monday was excellent. We landed 12 wild trout with 8 fish being brown trout and 4 rainbows. All up stream fishing with #12 and #14 stimulators with a #18 copper john dropper nymph. We took 3/4 fo the fish on the dropper fly and the other 1/4 on the dry fly. The browns in this particular stream are beautifully colored with nice cherry dots on their flanks. The rainbows jump as high as you are tall. 2wt. and 3 wt. rods are in order and tons of fun with trout anywhere from 6" to 14. Did see a few #14 yellow sallies, some #16 caddis, and a few random #14 grey fox. No rising fish. We caught fish in deep plunge pools and some secondary water that might get over looked by the average angler. Keep your thermometer handy and looks like the weather might cool down some this week. Remember to clean your gear and keep the non-native species at home. Have Fun, Willy
